Seminars & Trainings Topics + recordings

Library 101: Starter Pack

A quick introduction to using the university library and its print and electronic resources, including a virtual tour of the facilities and an opportunity to ask questions. This is done usually one week before the semester starts. Q&A included.

Citing in APA Style for Beginners

When writing any university paper, citing all used sources consistently is essential. These sources differ from those used in high school papers and may include scholarly articles, books, datasets, or research data. Are you unsure how to handle this and worried about plagiarism? In the seminar, we will look at:

  • Why citation is essential and what sources we actually cite,
  • What a citation looks like in an academic text,
  • The difference between direct quotation and paraphrasing,
  • How to create in-text citation and a reference list according to APA 7th citation style.

E-resources and How to Search Them Effectively

Key skills for efficient searching in e-resources, strategies and techniques for quickly and accurately finding scholarly articles, data, analyses, and other types of e-resources to support quality study.

Unlocking Company Insights: Working with D&B Hoovers, Orbis, and Passport

Data about companies are a vital resource, essential for conducting company analyses, valuations, and assessing market positions. Through selected databases available at VŠE, you can access detailed information on companies from around the world – including employee numbers, turnover, profitability, liquidity, capital structure, tax efficiency, and inputs for credit ratings.

In this seminar, we will explore how to navigate and effectively use key databases provided by VŠE – specifically D&B Hoovers and Orbis – to find and work with international company data. We will also provide a brief demonstration of Passport to show additional resources that can support your business research and analysis.

Citation Pop-up

One day in the second half of each semester is dedicated to consultation for students writing their thesis. It is not a lecture or a seminar. The focus is on solving individual problems that may occur while citing.

Seminars & Trainings for Specific Courses

The library also offers seminars for specific course subjects. If you are interested in a particular topic, contact us at i-servis@vse.cz to discuss the details of the seminar. To ensure the library seminar is useful for the course, it is necessary to align it as closely as possible with the subject matter of the course, and it should be thematically related to the content being covered.

When arranging seminars for courses, it is customary for the instructor to:

  1. Work together with us before the seminar to align the seminar with the course content and possibly consider assigning homework to students.
  2. Be present during the seminar and introduce it, i.e., place it in the context of the course as a whole, and if necessary, supplement the presentation in line with the course objectives.

For bachelor’s and master’s seminars, we typically include e-resources and the rules of proper citation.
