1. How to place a request (order) for a book?
Requests for books are placed directly from the www browser. When placing a request, you must meet the conditions as follows:
to be registered (in order to register it is necessary to come to one of the libraries with a valid identity card and your identification card)
to log in into the system at the address http://library.vse.cz/aleph
to search the requested book and display its units
to click on the request
to confirm the order and subsequently to check if a similar text displays at the top yellow bar:
2. What if I cannot see the choice "request"?
The first contingency: you have been logged out by the system
Please verify (check) wheter on the top bar is displayed text user
The second contingency: It is not possible to place a request for this book
It is not possible to place a request for every item. Whether the item can be borrowed and how long for depends on the status of the document. Currently there can be placed orders via the internet for books with status for 1 month (na 1 měsíc) and 1 semester (na 1 semestr) that are located in these libraries:
Knihovna VŠE – sklad (Central depository Zizkov), Studijní knihovna JM - sklad, Točná, CDMS.
3. How do I find out the state of my requests?
In the top menu after login the option User displays. When you click on this option, it is possible to see your loans, return dates, the state of executing the requests and other information.
4. How do I cancel a request?
Click on the option User in the left top menu. Choose the item Hold requests. A list of your requests will display.
Click on the number of the request (there will display a detail of the request).
If your request is still to be processed, at the bottom bar there will display the button Delete.
If you cannot see the button Delete, your order is still being processed.
5. How do I find out that the book is ready for me?
If you state you contact e-mail address upon registration, you will receive a notice to your address. In addition to this you can whenever check the state of your requests through the www interface from the menu User/Hold requests.
6. Where can I pick up the book?
The books are usually to be collected in the branch library in which it is located. Information about a place where the books are prepared is a part of the e-mail that announces that the request was executed.
7. What the notions "Knihovna VŠE-sklad", "Půjčovna FM", "KMAE",etc signify?
These denote the location to where the unit falls under. In the Aleph these locations are also denoted as branch libraries. The localization to the branch library also determines where the books will be ready to be borrowed.
8. Why is the request sometimes executed for long, even though its status is "Na místě?"?
Each of the libraries has its procedure of executing a request that is determined by the physical location of the books, staff capacity and so on. These factors influence the time when the book is actually ready. Sometimes the execution of the order may take a longer time (e.g. the location at Točná is served only with a 2-3 weeks interval during the semester). If you know ahead that it is not possible to wait for the book for more days, you can upon setting a request to reduce the length of its duration by the use of validity end date (period of interest).
9. What do the notions "Na místě", "Objednáno", "Rezervováno" denote?
Na místě – the book is located in the branch library
Objednáno – there was placed a request for the book which has not been executed yet
Rezervováno – the book is ready to be collected
Date (e.g. 14/Apr/2003) – the book is borrowed, the information about the end of regular loan period is this date
10. My request "disappeared".
The first contingency: The validity of the request expired (the so-called period of interest)
There is a preset a 90 days period of validity. However, when ordering, you can reduce the period of validity of a request (e.g. I need lecture notes for an examination in a week, then if the lecture notes are not available until this time, this request has no importance for me).
The second contingency: Your request was executed, however, you did not collect the books during the fixed period
Information that the book is prepared for you are sent by e-mail (if you stated your e-mail address upon registration). Period to collect a book is usually 3 days from taking it out from depository, individual libraries have the power to change this period. The date until when the book is prepared for you to pick it up is written in the e-mail that you receive after your request is executed, and it is also in the list of Hold requests that is accessible through the www (see question 3).
After this period elapses, the book is returned to the depository, or it is ready to be borrowed to another user. Your request is deleted.
11. How do I change my password to the Aleph?
If you log in to the Aleph by use of your login and current password, you can access the button User at the top menu bar. After clicking on this button other options will open under the top bar, one of them being the Password.
Rules for choosing a password
Do not use space, diacritics and other characters that can differ according to the national setting of the computer (e.g. be careful with swapping the letters y and z, if there is or is not turned on the Czech keyboard).
12. How do I renew my loans?
Loans can be renewed individually. If you have a list of loans displayed, then it is possible to display other details of a loan. Apart from purely information data there can display an offer to renew the respective loan.
If the option Renew does not display, the item is excluded from borrowing because of the category of a book (renewals are not done for books having loan period for 1 semester), or if the respective book is already reserved by another user (he/she has a reservation).
